James O. Leckie C L. Peck, Class of 1906, Professor of
Environmental Engineering and Applied Earth Sciences |
Jim Leckie is an environmental chemist interested in the application of chemical principles to the study of pollutants behavior in natural aquatic systems and in engineered processes. His research interests include environmental aspects of surface and colloid chemistry and low temperature aqueous geochemistry of trace elements. His research has included studies of the transport and fate of radionuclides in groundwater, rivers, lakes and near coastal marine environments. In addition, he does research on how humans become exposed to chemicals, emphasizing dermal exposure of children to pesticides. He has appointments in both Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geochemical and Environmental Sciences (courtesy appointment). He has received the American Society of Civil Engineers Rudolf Hering Medal in 1981 and was a Fulbright Fellow 1979-80.
Professor Leckie is the Principal Investigator on the Clean Water Programme, a large multidisciplinary research effort evaluating aspects of water reclamation and recycle in Singapore. In addition, he is the Co-Director of the Singapore Stanford Partnership, an innovative collaborative educational experiment with the city state of Singapore to establish a preeminent graduate teaching and research program in environmental engineering and science. Professor Leckie's other interests include technology transfer and teaching and research programs in environmental science in developing nations
